When you're in the process of creating a new climate action plan, it can be hard to land on the right targets. You'll probably want to play around with different sets of measures and targets before landing on the final version.

Futureproofed can help you in facilitating those discussions with your city council. You can draft a plan in the tool, backed by numbers. This will allow you to have qualitative, relevant discussions on where to focus.

This article explains how you can prepare multiple climate plan scenario's to show your city council in your Futureproofed account.

STEP 1: Creating your first climate action plan

As a first step, you can create your first scenario like you would create a normal climate plan in Futureproofed. You should create a new plan, for example "Scenario A: 100% renewable by 2030" filled with all the clusters, measures and actions you want to focus on.

Read this article for a full step-by-step guide on how to do that.

STEP 2: Creating the plans for your new scenarios

Create a new plan for each scenario that you want to add to your account.

For example:

  • Scenario A: 100% renewable by 2030 - Added in STEP 1

  • Scenario B: Focus on renovation

  • Scenario C: Focus on mobility

  • Scenario D: 1.5° aligned plan

In each of these plans, add the relevant clusters.

STEP 3: Duplicating your measures

In order to work efficiently, you can bulk-duplicate everything you already added in Scenario A.

  • Go to the "Measures" tab

  • Click the three dots •••

  • Click "Bulk actions"

  • Select all measures by checking the checkbox in the top left corner

  • Click "Duplicate"

  • Add a logical suffix that will make you understand which scenario it should belong to; "Scenario B" for example & click "Next"

  • Pick the settings you prefer for your duplication process. For example, if you also want to link it to the same actions you've added in your first plan, Check "Link duplicate to same related actions".

You can also choose to copy the target, the progress, the internal notes. And you could choose to add another responsible user or another time period for all the measures in your bulk duplication.

⚠️ Do not check the box "Link duplicate to same plans and clusters"

  • Click "Duplicate measures" ✅ (This may take a few minutes to load)

STEP 4: Linking the measures to your new scenario

As a next step, we'll make sure that the measures you have just duplicated, are linked to the right clusters in the right scenarios.

  • In Plan overview; Open the scenario you want to complete. For this example, we're continuing with "Scenario B".

  • Hover over any of the clusters you created for scenario B (like mentioned in STEP 2) and click the "+" sign that appears on the right side

  • Click "Link existing measures"

A pop-up will show, listing all the measures in your account. Scroll down to find the measures you just duplicated. You will recognise them by the suffix you added in STEP 3. In our example, we can see "Scenario B" next to each measure title.

  • Click the checkbox next to each measure you wish to add to the cluster you selected.

  • Click "Save changes"

  • Repeat with the other clusters 🔁

🎉 Congratulations! You've just duplicated your climate action plan into a whole new scenario.

🔁 OPTIONAL: Repeat with more Scenarios 🔁

STEP 5: Specifying the targets of your new scenario(s)

Once the measures are duplicated to the new scenario, you can start playing around with the ambitions and the targets of each of the measures.

  • Raise/lower the targets of measures

  • Add new measures that you didn't have in your first scenario

  • Delete measures that are not relevant for this scenario

STEP 6: Comparing the impact between Scenario's

By default, your dashboard graph and all the analysis tools show the sum of all the measures in your account. However, when you're working with scenarios, you will want to have a look at each of the scenarios separately.

  • In your dashboard, in the graph that shows the evolution of your city's emissions, click the dropdown menu "All plans and clusters".

  • Select the scenario that you want to analyse.

  • Feel free to switch back and forth between all the scenario's in your account.

The same dropdown menu is available for the following analysis tools:

  • Progress

  • Mitigation cost

  • Emission and consumption

  • Co-benefits
